From Halong Bay we hopped a short flight south to the middle of Vietnam. Here the village of Hoi An has been preserved and restored using old-style Vietnamese architecture.
We stayed nearby at the exquisite Nam Hai resort that is one of the jewel properties for the year. A "villa" at the Nam Hai includes four separate buildings - a central pavillon with swimming pool and a view of the ocean, two bedroom suites, and a live-in butler's quarters. Our butler, Ms. Phuc, was so enthusiastic and happy, we felt right at home instantly.
The Nam Hai had the one feature we had most desired and never yet found in any other hotel - FREE laundry service!
After settling in, we headed to Hoi-An for a hands-on market tour and cooking class at the Morning Glory restaurant. Although cooking is usually Gina's favorite, the whole family enjoyed discovering new fruits and vegetables and then making our own spring rolls, marinated chicken, pancakes, and green mango salad. Afterward, Katherine and Gina discovered the tailoring shops of Hoi-An which are especially good for casual ladies wear.
The rest of our stay at Nam Hai was wonderfully restful; an ideal place for a honeymoon or quiet R&R.
