Le Grand Vefour has been around for a very long time. It was the first restaurant in Europe to be open to the public with a menu. So with our friends Rachel, Sophie, Sandy, and Grant, we went there for lunch.
Guy Martin, the head chef, met us at the door. We greeted him then went with the waiter to our private room upstairs. The room was a low ceiling, and velvet walled. It had white curtains hiding curved tiny windows.
We were started off with salty fried carrots and fish, and our choice of plain or nut bread. Then an amuse bouche made up of a little square of foie gras, green and red sauces, and a cold squash soup. Next was the coolest part of the meal! We got what looked like an ice-cream Sunday. White whipped stuff and red sauce on it. Well guess what it really was? Celery foam and pureed beets. When we were finished they took our orders and we waited for the meal to begin.
We joked and laughed until the first course came. For Sophie, Dad, and me, that was 4 squid heads stuffed with various vegetables, and the bodies (which were really crunchy) on the side. For Carter, Mom, Rachel, and Sandy, that was toast and two bricks of fresh foie gras. For Grant it was crayfish soup.
Then the main meal came. I can only describe mine, because I was so focused on eating it, I didn’t notice anyone else’s until it was too late. I got white fish poached in butter, with a strange honey potato under it, and regular potatoes on the left. On a separate plate came lemon mushrooms with a violet flower.
Next was the cheese. The cheese came on a cart of medium size. On one half was goat and sheep cheeses. And on the other was cow. We each chose 2 or 3 cheeses and went to work. But not before a waiter came around with various breads. For a while, it was a silent meal. We all enjoyed the course and were sad when it ended.
The desert, in my mind, was like a swimming pool. It had a chocolate tower (diving board), with burnt caramel ice cream (person on the diving board), looming over a round chocolate cake (pool). Everything about it was chocolate. You know how robbers go “money, money, money!?” Well I said “Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate!”
I was completely stuffed and regretted the bread I ate earlier that Dad said I would regret. Then tiny deserts and jellies and the huge vanilla cake came and I told him that I regretted the bread. “Katherine” He said “Next time won’t you listen to your father?” I let that question go unanswered and watched everyone eat cake. Then came the board of chocolates and I laughed out loud. Then the various candies and marshmallows came and I cried out loud (funny cried).
Finally the meal was over and it was time to go home.
