Louis the XVI’s Garden

by in Europe, France

We heard that Louis the XVI had an amazing garden! So the family decided to visit it. Our aunt, uncle, and cousins wanted to visit the castle (Versailles) first, so while they did that the rest of us including Carter, Mom, Dad, Grandma Grandpa, Nicholas (my baby cousin who is 3 months old), my other small cousin Simon who is 2, and I went to the gardens. We saw an amazing gazebo-like place with a big statue of Encelade (a Titan) being covered in rocks in the middle of a fountain. The hedges were shaped like teapots, they had their arms at their hips and reminded me of models walking down the run way.    After that everyone except the baby, got soft serve ice-cream that was probably the best ice-cream I had ever eaten! We stopped at a little pond where we rented a row-boat. I put on a life jacket and carefully stepped in, using my grandpa for support. Carter started out rowing until my grandpa got impatient. While he rowed ( quite well) my grandma who was in the back of him started telling him which way to go. “Have you guys ever heard of a back seat driver?” Grandpa asked. We all laughed at how literal his joke was.  Finally I tried rowing, and learned it was much harder than it looked. While I rowed in circles grandpa told us about when he steered the boat in high school. While the boat team who’s members were 8, 6 foot 2 boys) rowed the boat. I eventually had to have Carter help me and we each took and oar and rowed together. Grandpa kept saying “STROKE!” “STROKE!” When we got off we went exploring until we found our other cousins, aunt and uncle. Most of us didn’t bring a jacket and it was getting quite cold. So we headed to a restaurant for lunch but they didn’t have enough room for twelve people inside. Finally we found a restaurant that could seat us inside and had a great lunch. As we were looking for the exit we found a huge fountain that was spraying water in time to the music that was playing. The last beat on the drum silenced the entire garden until everyone broke out into applause.    I wished I owned all the magic, beauty and smiles that live in Louis the XVI’s garden.
